More than 70 social studies teachers and advisers of student governments from the province of Kalinga joined the training workshop on civic education and Project Citizen organized by the Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy (PCCED) from June 12-14 in Tabuk City, Kalinga.

Organized in cooperation with the Department of Education-Division of Kalinga, the training workshop aims to help social studies teachers embed civics in the subjects they teach.

“The objective of social studies subjects is to equip our young people with the knowledge and skills of good citizenship,” PCCED Chairperson Dr. Clement Camposano explains.

The workshop began with five modules designed to complement the existing DepEd curriculum for Araling Panlipunan (social studies): “Education for Democracy”, The Philippines as a Nation in Progress”, “Asian History and Civic Culture”, World History and the Story of Democracy”, and, “Economic Citizenship”.

PCCED executive director Rey Trillana also noted that civic education is not an end in itself. “Civic education should lead to citizen participation,” he explains, “what good will it do our students if they have civic knowledge but refuse to participate in the affairs of governance.”

Ms. Julievense Miranda and Ms. Raiza Cusi were the lead facilitators for the Project Citizen (PC) training. PC complements the civic education training by providing students with the opportunity to learn about democratic policymaking by actually participating in their communities.
